And the ramblings will commence...

From the many of the artists I have had the pleasure to meet and chat with over the past few years, it's pretty obvious that being an artist in this day and age (and any day in age in history) can be ridiculously difficult. Despite the impending doom of the current economy, the politics of the game and the never ending hunt for a somewhat consistent income without selling your soul, there is the age old question of ... why the hell are we doing this? So many people scoff on art as a career, the mere mention of it makes people slant an eyebrow and give you the courteous, "Good for you" line, and yet here I am.

The best example of this is my beloved mother's reaction when I told her what I was changing my major to. It was a mix of Korean and English but the main gist was, "Well, I can tell people you have a degree...you can teach with that right?" My mother has been very supportive in her own awesome Korean mom way, it took a few years for her to realize I was serious and I inherited her stubbornness so she decided to accept it.

I try to draw from moments like these in my work and the things that both irritate me and make me laugh in our society and its expectation of the "Model Minority". I dedicate this older painting of mine to my mom who like many Korean mothers can be a saint in her hard work and sacrifice for her family but is often bound to the expectations of society and culture. Hope you enjoy. >_<
